Defects to Infants Because of Maternal Smoking

Babies born to smoking mothers are more likely to suffer from limb defects.Ignoring the warning: 17 percent of pregnant women in the UK, and 45 percent of those under 20, still smoking.
according to a new report smoking during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of serious birth defects including missing and deformed limbs.

 They found that smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of having a baby with deformed limbs lost about 26 percent.
Newborns are vulnerable also 28 percent more likely to have cleft lip and clubfoot or 33 percent more likely to have defects of the skull.
The study, which looked at the total 174,000 cases of malformation, was published online today in the journal Human Reproduction.
Despite health warnings about the dangers of smoking while expecting a baby, 17 percent of British women are pregnant, and 45 percent of those under 20, still smoking.
“The message from this study is that women should stop smoking before pregnancy or very early, to reduce the likelihood of having a baby with serious physical disabilities for life.”

A Department of Health spokesman said: “Smoking in pregnancy is a major public health problem posed health risks for mothers and their babies.
“We are on track to achieve this and NHS doctors, nurses and midwives work hard to overcome the smoke.”
